Woma Python
The Woma Python, also commonly known as Ramsay’s python, the sand python, and simply the Woma, is found in arid, sandy areas throughout Western and Central Australia.
Adult Woma pythons typically grow to around 1.5m in length, and can live 20 to 30 years.
The Woma Python is largely nocturnal. By day this snake may be found sheltering in hollow logs or under leaf debris. When travelling across hot sands or other surfaces it lifts its body off the ground and reaches far forward before pushing off the ground again, having only several centimetres of its body touching the ground at a time.
Did You Know?
- This is one of two species of Aspidites, the pitless pythons. The generic name, Aspidites, translates to “shield bearer” about the symmetrically shaped head scales.
- Woma’s are immune to Australia’s venomous snakes, this is because their main diet is other reptiles.
