Sulphur-crested Cockatoo
Cacatua galerita
Sulphur-crested cockatoos are found across half of Australia’s land, from the north down the east coast to the south and Tasmania they avoid dry areas with few trees. Their plumage is white, with yellow (sulphur-coloured) feathers under the wing and on the tail and crest.
Sulphur-crested cockatoos have a distinctive raucous call. They are highly inquisitive and as intelligent as a human child.
Sulphur-cresteds’ live to around 85 years old. Walkabout’s cockatoos are mostly orphaned from their human families. Humans are in love with the idea of adopting baby pets, not thinking about the fact that a long living pet will almost certainly outlive its owner and become orphaned and homeless one day. Please adopt an adult bird needing a home, not a cute baby.
Males typically have black pupils, whereas females have red or brown pupils. If a bird has brown or orange eyes you can be (almost) sure it’s a female.
