Eclectus Parrot
Eclectus roratus macgillivrayi
The Australian Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus macgillivrayi) is the largest of nine known subspecies of Eclectus Parrot. This subspecies is only found in Australia, in the canopy of rainforests and adjacent eucalypt woodlands of Eastern Cape York Peninsula far North Queensland.
The Eclectus Parrots are famously noisy and conspicuous, calling as they fly and screeching loudly when disturbed.
In the early morning, pairs and small parties leave the roosting trees and move out into surrounding forest to feed. The diet of the Eclectus parrot consists mainly of fruits, nuts, flower and leaf buds, and some seeds.
Male and female Eclectus Parrots have such different colours that they are often confused as two completely separate species. The female is red and blue with a black beak, and the males are green with an orange beak.
