Olive Python
Liasis olivaceus
Olive Python
The Olive Python is a ground dwelling non-venomous snake with a moderately slender body and a long narrow head, wider than their neck. Its scales are smooth and have a soft sheen. They look and feel smooth due to their high scale count in a single colour of olive, greenish-brown, chocolate reddish-brown with cream coloured belly.
With adults reaching over 4m in length, the Olive Python is Australia’s second largest snake species (the Scrub Python reaches 8m in length!).
Olive Pythons live on the Queensland Northern Territory border following the coast to northern Western Australia. There is a subspecies of Olive Python found within the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
They are usually found in woodlands, or dry shrubland and grassland. Particularly along rocky gorges with permanent waterholes. Here they find their diet of lizards, snakes, mammals and birds.
They are sometimes confused with the venomous King Brown Snake and killed in error.
