General Assistance Work – limited places available
We may have place for a student to do general guest services assistance work, reporting to our team administrator.
The work is mostly indoors.
The work involves routine tasks supporting our ‘front of house’ and ‘guest services’ teams.
Tasks may include counting stock, cleaning, filing, defrosting fridges, cleaning guest accommodation, doing the laundry, running errands (on site), etc.
Working hours are from 9:30am to 3:30pm with a half-hour lunch break.
Animal Care Work – not available for school work experience
We do not accept school students to work with our ranger team (the team responsible for looking after the animals).
Reasons – Training Time:
- A tremendous amount of time goes into training a person to the point where they can work safely with our animals (safe for animals and safe for people).
- We are happy to invest time in training someone if we know they intend to work with our animals on an ongoing basis so our animals will eventually get the benefit of their training.
Reasons – Supervision Time:
- We look after more than 400 animals spread out across 8 acres, so there is a tremendous amount of work (and walking) to do each day.
- Our rangers have to work (and walk) at a constant pace throughout the day to make sure they get through everything the animals rely on us to do.
- If our rangers slow down to supervise people who will only be with us for 5-10 days, even if they are just ‘observers’, the animals’ quality of care may suffer.
How to apply
Students must apply to us themselves.
- We do not accept applications from parents or teachers on behalf of their children.
- The students must apply to us themselves, with their parents’ permission.
We do require a written application telling us all about you and why you want to get your work experience at Walkabout Park.
- Your application should show that you have researched Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary and have a good idea of the type of work you will be involved in.
- You should explain why work experience at Walkabout Park is important for you.
- Please put care into your application. It is not sufficient to say that you love animals.
- Places are very limited, so please don’t be disappointed if you do not get considered for a placement.
- If you are considered, you and your parents will be invited to an information meeting with the General Manager before a final decision is made about your placement.
